Tamara DeShields-Burns is the third child born to William DeShields and Geraldine Conyers-DeShields of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In her early ages, she attended Fitler Academic Plus in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and Academy Park High School in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. She continued her higher education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Human Services from Chestnut Hill College and a Master’s of Science in Human Resource Management from Strayer University. First Lady Burns has over 20+ years of public school administrative experience from working in the Philadelphia School District, Baltimore City Public Schools and now Maryland State Department of Education.
1st Lady Burns accepted the Lord at an early age at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she served as an active youth usher. In 2003 she joined the AME church with her husband and son.
As a former member of Wright’s AME Church in Elkton, Maryland she served as a Steward, Trustee, Missionary Vice President and Treasure. She currently serves as the area Vice Chair of the Simpson Curtis Missionary Society and President of the Bond/Jones local Missionary Society at St. James AME Church on Gravel Hill Road. After transitioning to St. James AME Church, when her husband answered the call to pastor in 2018, she now serves the women, youth and children of the church and continues to serve with the missionaries alongside her husband of 15 years as his helpmate.
In addition to her church responsibilities, she is a proud mother to her son and blessed with two daughters, and three grandchildren. 1st Lady enjoys quite time at home with her toy poodles, shopping, taking trips and spending time with her husband and family.
1st Lady Burns favorite scripture that brings her peace is Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
