Rev. Ricardo Burns is the son of Raymond Burns and Georgette Curry. A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rev. Burns was raised and trained at an early age in Kingdom living. He accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at the age of 12. He was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Philadelphia by Reverend Emmerson Talmadge.

Rev. Burns graduated from William Penn High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1978.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education from Pennsylvania State University and a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Cheyney University.

He accepted a call to preach on April 18, 2012.  He preached his Trial Sermon on June 17, 2012, Father’s Day.  He was admitted into the Baltimore Annual Conference’s Board of Examination in May of 2013. Rev. Burns was ordained as an Itinerant Deacon in the AME Church on April 15, 2016.

Rev. Burns was a member of Wright’s African Methodist Episcopal Church. While at Wright’s, Rev. Burns served on the Usher Board, Trustee Board, Steward Board and the Steward and Finance Commission.  Rev. Burns also served as the Men’s Bible Study and Sunday School teacher. Prior to joining Wright’s Rev. Burns was a member of Victory Temple AME Church in Lansdowne, PA.

He has over 30 years in public education as a teacher, principal and administrator in the School District of Philadelphia. Rev. Burns was the first African American School Superintendent for the School District of Lancaster Pennsylvania.  He is currently President of HigherSchool Instructional Services, a private educational management company.

Rev. Burns is most proud of the Bible Study fellowship he organized that meets Thursday evening in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The fellowship has over 20 members who have attended faithfully since 2014.

On April 14, 2018, Rev. Burns was appointed Pastor of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church Gravel Hill.

Rev. Burns is married to Tamara DeShields-Burns. They are the proud parents of three beautiful children; Kyeemah, Malika and Bryan, and three adoreable grandchildren.

His favorite scripture is 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

He believes that to know the Will of God you must know the Word of God.
